Surgical Pavilion | Hoag’s Sun Family Campus

The Surgical Pavilion will be the largest new structure on the Sun Family Campus.

Soon to be the largest new structure on campus, the 130,000-square-foot Surgical Pavilion marks a bold leap forward in surgical innovation and patient-centered care. Opening in 2026, the pavilion will meet rising demand for complex inpatient surgeries while introducing expanded capabilities, smarter workflows, and a healing environment thoughtfully crafted for patients, families, and care teams alike. Building on Hoag’s strong record with robotic-assisted procedures, the new surgical facilities will feature advanced robotic technology designed to enhance precision, accelerate recovery, and deliver better outcomes.

At the core of this transformation will be eight state-of-the-art operating rooms, including hybrid and cardiovascular suites—a major expansion from the two operating rooms currently in use on campus. These new spaces offer increased capacity and versatility to support a wide range of procedures with the latest surgical advancements. A new critical care unit will offer intensive, specialized care for patients, with thoughtfully designed areas so that families and visitors can remain close during the most crucial moments.

One of the most forward-looking features is real-time integration between surgeons and pathologists—specialists who analyze tissue and fluid samples during surgery. This live collaboration will reduce the typical 30-minute delay associated with transporting specimens, speeding up decision-making and improving the surgical workflow.

Another critical enhancement is the precision airflow system engineered to protect the sterile field. Designed to direct air away from the patient and remove airborne contaminants from the room, this system supports the highest level of infection control. It’s just one example of how every design choice in the pavilion—from the operating rooms to recovery areas—was made with patient safety and clinical excellence in mind.

The Surgical Pavilion represents a major advancement not only for patient care but also for supporting and empowering the health care teams. Its modern design will play a key role in attracting physicians who recognize the benefits of such innovative facilities.

The pavilion also prioritizes staff amenities, offering dedicated spaces to rest and recharge. One of these spaces, the Trish & Mike Berchtold Staff Lounge & Courtyard, has been named in honor of the pair’s generous gift. Trish served on the Hoag Hospital Foundation Board of Directors, and this naming reflects the Berchtolds’ ongoing commitment to nurturing Hoag’s team.
As the Surgical Pavilion rises, it signals more than expansion—it reflects a deep commitment to care, innovation, and thoughtful design. Every square foot has been carefully considered to elevate the experience and outcomes for all who come through its doors.
