Nature That Nurtures: The Sun Family Campus’ Outdoor Healing Havens
The concept that getting fresh air can be good for you is more than a casual saying; it is rooted in scientific studies showing the benefits of the great outdoors. A hallmark of the Sun Family Campus in Irvine is an emphasis on open-air spaces, dappled in sunlight and greenery, that reconnect people with the environment. In a milestone for the expansion of the growing hospital, the new Judy and Jan Kolar Wellness Park was dedicated on February 1 with a special ceremony. Friends of the late Judy and Jan Kolar celebrated the legacy of the pair’s $4 million estate gift to Hoag at the dedication, which included a walkthrough of the park. A natural space that nurtures healing is a fitting tribute to the Kolars’ love of the outdoors, which provides a place of respite for patients and their families.
The park is just one of several outdoor spaces at the Sun Family Campus. Gardens dedicated to sensory healing, therapeutic movement, and meditation will be focal points of the hospital, while decks and a promenade will bring the outdoors into the healing process. Blending natural elements into the patient experience can incorporate nature’s many restorative powers, including reducing stress, improving mood, and increasing overall well-being. Patients, visitors, and Hoag team members will enjoy soothing landscapes of plants and flowers throughout the campus that will engage the senses with beautiful sights, pleasant sounds, and fresh air.
